It was the twilight of 2014, a moment in time when the air carried a hint of nostalgia and excitement of new beginnings; as the year was swiftly approaching its end, Raven and Yasmin had arranged to meet up; it was an occasion to celebrate, their journey together had been anything but ordinary, it had been a year filled with both challenges and triumphs that had ultimately drawn them together.

During those sultry-summer months, a time typically breed carefree adventures, they had transformed from their close, childhood friendship into something much more profound; a blossoming relationship thrived amidst the turmoil of their surroundings.
This evolution was not without its struggles, the two had faced relentless homophobic discrimination within the confines of their school, and were often subject to cruel remarks and judgemental stares that stung like ice; even Raven’s own father had expressed disapproval, casting a shadow over their happiness.

Yet through it all they had managed to carve out a sanctuary for themselves, a space were there love flourished despite the challenges.

Their bond had become unbreakable, a testament to their resilience and unwavering support to one another.

As Raven was seated at her desk, she gazed into the mirror for a moment, she contemplated the journey that had brought her to this point; she had invested considerable time and effort into her appearance for the planned meet-up, the anticipation of seeing Yasmin sent butterflies in her stomach; she smiled at her reflection, admiring how the light make-up she had carefully applied enhanced her silvery-grey eyes, it seemed to make them shine with a brightness that mirrored her excitement.

“Are you going out” a sudden question startled her from her reverie; she turned her head slightly to glance in the direction of her bedroom door; it was open, and her little brother was poking his head inside, he had a puzzled expression etched across his youthful face.
His innocent curiosity was evident as he took in the sight of her, his eyes darted between her carefully chosen outfit and the effort she had poured into her make-up.

“Yes” she replied, a smile gracing her lips as she straightened in her chair; the warmth of her response seemed to reassure him, yet he still wore a look of confusion, perhaps struggling to comprehend the complexities of teenage relationships.
Shifting her gaze she downwards, she directed her attention towards her shoes, they had been placed beside her desk, with a gentle lean from her chair she pulled them closer, feeling the cool material against her fingertips; once she was satisfied, she looked back to her brother; eager to shift the conversation, to share in the joy of the moment

“Do you want to help me pick out which ones to wear?” she offered; wanting to bring him into her world, to let him experience her excitement and the emotional whirlwind that awaited her beyond the walls of their home; Dylan smiled happily, entering the room to help.

Elsewhere across the seaside-town; Yasmin had been diligently making arrangements for the much anticipated meet-up with Raven; the air was thick with excitement as she considered the wonderful feelings she felt about celebrating the end of the year with her; they had done this before as friends; but this time, this time it was different; seeing the year out while in a relationship struck a different chord; the thoughts of their relationship danced within her mind, weaving a tapestry of hope and possibility for what the future will hold.
The idea of their bond only strengthening as they entered the new year filled her with joy and a soft smile crept onto her face.

As she meandered her way through isles of the charming little corner shop, her eyes gleamed with delight at the little treasure she was about to purchase; approaching the counter, her heart racing with the thought of what the night might hold; she was making her movements instinctual, she wasn’t paying attention as she began placing items onto the counter, she was simply lost in the thoughts racing through her mind.

Just as she was about to complete her transaction, the young lad behind the counter looked at her, he noticed her absent, but happy expression and flashed her a grin “You look like you’ve got a special night planned” he commented, it brought Yasmin to the present; his tone was warm and inviting

Yasmin met his gaze, she gave a nod of affirmation; he smiled happily in response “I hope she likes your gift” he added, he was intrigued by her excitement

“I have no doubts” Yasmin replied happily, her voice bubbling with optimism; she watched intently as the cashier skilfully wrapped the delicate necklace she had chosen; placing it gently into a small, elegant box; to her surprise, he decided to wrap it in a colourful paper even though it wasn’t required, demonstrating a thoughtful touch that made her heart swell with appreciation

With a sense of gratitude, Yasmin accepted the neatly packaged gift from his hands; while he efficiently placed the other items she had purchased int a sturdy plastic bag “Thank you” she said, beaming with joy as she looked at him, her eyes sparkling

The cashier simply winked in response, a playful gesture that added to the light hearted flair of their interaction; with her purchase in hand and her spirits high, Yasmin took her leave of the shop, a little bell that was above the door jingled as she exited the building.

Determined to make the evening special, she decided to arrive to the planned meet-up spot before Raven did; knowing Raven as well as she did, Yasmin anticipated that she would take longer than she had indicated, and that suited Yasmin just fine; it gave her a moment to get things ready, to gather her thoughts; perhaps she could make everything even more perfect for Raven’s arrival; the anticipation was bubbling within her, she couldn’t help but envision the magic of the night that awaited them.

When Raven finally arrived to the designated meeting spot; it was exactly as Yasmin had predicted, Raven was later than she had initially claimed to be coming at, this small detail brought a smile to Yasmin’s face; Raven’s tendency for poor timekeeping had become something of a running joke between them, however, Yasmin was well aware that Raven had been making conscious efforts to improve her punctuality lately; in the past, Raven might have shown up more than an hour late, so this was a noticeable improvement that Yasmin appreciated.

As Raven spotted Yasmin, her face lit-up with excitement, quickly making her way over; when she reached Yasmin she immediately wrapped her arms around her, pulling her into a warmth and affectionate hug; the embrace was tight and filled with a kind of warmth that was only reserved for those Raven was closest too.

Once they separated, Yasmin took a moment to take in Raven’s appearance; she noticed the effort Raven had put into her outfit and make-up; her silvery-grey eyes drew Yasmin in much more than usual, it was almost hypnotic “My brother helped me with the outfit” Raven said innocently, as if she was were sharing a secret
Yasmin could help but feel a flicker of amusement at the confession; though she wasn’t entirely sure why Raven felt the need to mention it, to be truthful, Raven looked perfectly fine; stylish and confident, an air of effortlessness that Yasmin admired

The sincerity in Raven’s voice made Yasmin smile even more; it was clear Raven was both proud of her appearance and a little self-conscious; that mix was endearing.
Yasmin felt a wave of warmth wash over her; she appreciated Raven immensely.

As Yasmin brought Raven over towards the table, Raven could see how beautifully arranged it was, she could see the attention and care Yasmin had put into every detail when setting it up; each item had been placed perfectly, it created an inviting atmosphere filled with warmth and intimacy; Yasmin, ever perceptive caught Raven’s gaze and drew her attention to the small gift nestled amongst the decorations; curiosity sparked in Raven’s eyes as she turned to look at Yasmin, she was intrigued by the thoughtful gesture.

With a graceful movement, Yasmin stepped closer and gently collected the gift, presenting it to Raven with a radiant smile that lit her face; the warmth of Yasmin’s expression filled Raven with anticipation as she accepted the gift; cradling it gently in her hands.

Carefully Raven began to peel away the delicate wrapping, her heart racing as she removed the layers; as the final piece of paper fell away, she revealed a small, elegant little box that shimmered subtle under the soft light.

Raven’s breath caught in her throat as she opened the box, unveiling a stunning necklace; the design reminded her of the one she had gifted to Yasmin previously at Christmas, a token of their deepening relationship; a wave happiness washed over her and she couldn’t help smiling at Yasmin, her eyes sparkling with appreciation and effection.

Their gaze locked and in that moment everything around them faded away, leaving just the two of them in their shared little world “Thank you” Raven whispered, her voice barely a murmur, she wasn’t sure why her words came out so softly, but the intimacy of the moment enveloped her, making her feel both vulnerable and cherished; with a gentle smile, she basked in the warmth of their connection, feeling a surge of emotions bubbling within her.

As she took a deep breath, she reflected on the new year that lay ahead, she hoped that it would be a time for their relationship to strengthen and bloom even further.
Feeling joy, contentment and hope washing over her, but above all else, she felt love; it was that, that stood out of all of the emotions she could feel so vividly in her heart; Raven was certain of her emotions, this wasn’t infatuation, the overwhelming feelings she had for Yasmin were profound and genuine.
They had grown up together, and their closeness transcended the superficial, weaving a bond that was rich, deep and filled with promise.

As she gaze into Yasmin’s eyes, she knew that their story was just beginning, and she was eager to see where it would lead them.

As the relentless ticking of the clock marked the final seconds of the year; the anticipation hung within the air like a thick, electric mist; Raven stood side-by-side, their fingers intertwined, their hearts racing in sync with the countdown; each tick echoed through the night, building excitement that danced within their chests.

Then, as the clock struck midnight; the world around them erupted; the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colours, with fireworks bursting into life in a spectacular display, brilliant reds, sparkling golds and shimmering blues cascaded through the dark sky.
Painting strokes of light that pulsated with rhythm of the celebration; the joyous sounds of cheering from those nearby mixed with laughter and the resounding booms of the fireworks created a symphony of happiness.

The magical moment as the first fireworks crackled and illuminated the night; Yasmin turned to Raven, her eyes reflecting the dazzling colours above; time seemed to stand still as they shared a look filled with warmth, connection and unspoken promise; without a word, they leaned in closer, drawn together as they shared in the moment.
