Chapter 2
Sydnie tried to avoid both Elliot and Wade at work. They would ridicule her every opportunity she had to dread going to work. The final straw was after the weekend when Wade had told Elliot that he copped off for a real minger, and Elliot asked if it was Sydnie; all Wade could do was laugh.
“Stop it,” Ashton shouted, disgusted at the pair. Sydnie ran out of the building and refused to go back.
She ended up leaving and not finishing her apprenticeship. When her parents asked why she didn’t want to return, she lied and told them it was not for her.
As her 18th birthday approached, her parents thought taking her for a birthday meal and then to the pub would be nice. She couldn’t have a big bash as she only had her friend Claire, but Sydnie was more than happy with her best friend.
That’s when Claire told Sydnie about the job offered in Wales and that she would have to move there. Sydnie would be on her own again. Of course, she was happy for Claire, but she would miss her terribly.
On her way home, Sydnie noticed a job vacancy and decided to apply. Right there on the spot, she met Carlton, the pub owner; he was twenty-five years her senior. He was so lovely, and he could see her potential as he listened to her talk about her business plan. He could tell she could make the pub come to life again and offered her the job. Sydnie knew she could make the pub a money maker and knew precisely what she would do.
The following year, the pub was thriving. With Carlton’s permission, she had put entertainment on at the weekends; of course, she could convince him of anything. He had fallen in love with her but didn’t know how to tell her. He didn’t think she could ever feel the same way. But she did; he was the first man to pay any attention. He made her feel like she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Making her think she could achieve anything. He once told her she was like a flower ready to bloom.
One evening after closing time, Carlton had prepared a meal and was going to ask Sydnie to join him. He was pleasantly surprised when she accepted.
From that night, their relationship changed; they became inseparable. However, Sydnie parents weren’t so sure about their daughter’s relationship with Carlton. They wanted to meet him; Carleton was more than happy to meet them; he wanted to marry their daughter.
