The Blackpool Blaze
The sky brightened with the morning summer sun; it was barely past eight and already that sun was glinting aggressively off of the metal and glass; inside of firehouse 1 the air was thick with a scent of coffee with the low hum camaraderie.
Jamie Williams; the station manager surveyed the crew with a practised eye – at forty-two with a presence as commanding as the roar of a fire engine, his gaze though held a flicker of fairness which earnt him the respect of those in that very firehouse.
Ash Johnson; the crew manager meticulously checked the pumps on Engine 1, his brow furrowed in concentration; next to him was Michael Brown – the Union representative and a veteran firefighter in his mid-thirties, he cracked a joke about Ash’s dedication to the machinery eliciting a grin from Jesse Hill; whose lean, athletic frame spoke of his military service.
Jesse was running through a mental checklist of his own, his focus already honed.
David Brewster; a man whose natural state was somewhere between a slapstick routine and controlled chaos was currently in the process of attempting to balance a precariously placed mug atop of his head while explaining the complexities of football strategy to an unimpressed Hayley Hardman.
Hayley was fresh out of training and barely two months into active service; she had a pale look despite the warmth, her nerves a constant buzz since joining the team, she managed a weak smile at David’s antic’s, her gaze drifting to the polished hoses a silent plea for a quiet day.
Then the calm was shattered as the scream of the horn erupted.
“Engine One; RTC Fire, multiple vehicles and possible building involvement; Blackpool promenade, near North Pier!” the dispatcher’s voice announced the tone urgent and strained
Jamie though was already on the board, his voice cutting through the rising tension “Ash full turnout; Michael, Jesse, David; with Ash, let’s move!”
The change with David was instantaneous – the mug fell with a clang, forgotten; his face, only moments ago creased with comedic exaggeration, hardened into a mask of determination.
Hayley, she felt her heart hammer against her chest, she moved with instinct, grabbing her kit.
Jesse was already running for the engine, Michael right behind him pulling his jacket on.
Ash, with a final check of the pump that was now redundant barked out orders, his movements precise and efficient.
The engine howled down church street, sirens wailed, a crimson blur against the grey architecture; as they swung onto the promenade, the scale of the incident slapped them.
The black plume of smoke thick and oily licked greedily at the sky, it billowed high above the iconic tower, visible for miles; below, near the North Pier chaos had already erupted; two cars, mangled – but it was the nearby hotel that was the real concern; flickering flames and billowing smoke; it was threatening to engulf the entire structure.
Panicked tourists and locals thronged the pavement, kept at bay by a thin police cordon “We’ve multiple casualties reported; possible entrapment on the upper floors” an officer yelled as Ash brought the engine to its screeching halt, strategically positioning it.
Jamie was already out from the command vehicle almost before it had even stopped, striding towards the building, his radio crackling “Ash; initial assessment!, Michael, establish water supply; Jesse, David, Hayley primary search and rescue team, go in through the main entrance, focus on visible casualties first, sweep the ground floor, Hayley stay close to Jesse and David; communicate!”
Hayley felt a wave of nausea; the heat radiating from the building was immense, the fire roared loudly like some kind of primal beast, she clutched her helmet, her hands trembling as she pulled it on; David, seeing her expression clapped her shoulder with a surprising gentleness “Deep breaths Hardman” he told her “We got this; just like training, but…, louder” for a moment, the old David flickered then vanished
“Water supply established!” Michael’s voice boomed over the dun, already hauling heavy hoses
Inside the heat was suffocating, visibility was almost zero and it was a labyrinth of debris and acris fumes; David maintained a calm and steady tone acting as Hayley’s anchor.
“Stay low and fan out!” Jesse shouted over the noise “Sweep with your hands, call anything out; Hayley remember your egress points”
Jesse’s light cut through the gloom, he was systematically searching, his military training having kicked in – methodical and precise movements, checking under desks and behind counters “Clear on the left!; keep moving!”
Suddenly David’s voice strained through the radio “Ash; got a couple here, elderly couple, disorientated near the reception desk, looks like smoke inhalation, a bit burnt, can we get ‘em out this way?”
“Copy that David” Ash responded “Michael, move to assist David with patient extraction” Ash commanded, Michael, who was now finished setting the second line moved immediately, his experience showing in his swift and decisive actions
Hayley meanwhile struggled with the intensity of the heat and disorientating smoke; the shouts and knowledge that people were burning did not help – it was overwhelming, she stumbled, her breath catching as she felt a rise in panic “Hayley!; what’s your status!” Ash’s voice, sharp and immediate cut through her terror
Quickly Hayley moved to respond to the call via her radio “I…, I’m okay” she choked out; forcing herself forwards, telling herself to remember her training ‘Control your brother; one step at a time’ she repeated to herself mentally
“Good; keep moving; Jesse, check the stairwell to the first floor; any signs of extension?” Ash questioned over the radio
“Affirmative Ash!; fire is breaching the stairwell; heavy smoke, but I think I hear something, coughing on the upper floor!” Jesse responded
Ash thought a moment, processing things said within a few seconds a quick glance about before responding “Right Jesse; you lead, Hayley, follow Jesse to provide cover; maintain two-way comms; Michael, David; once you two are out, get ready to provide back up to Jesse and Hayley on the upper floors” he issued out quickly, shifting his attention over towards Jamie “Confirmed entrapment on the first floor, possible on second; stairwell compromised but passable for the time being” Ash said; relaying the update with an unflappable voice
Inside, the ascent was difficult; brutal, Jesse and Hayley found themselves crawling as he led the way with a thermal device, Hayley follows his lead – the air grew thinner, hotter; the floorboards creaked ominously under the movement and additional weight “Here; this room!” Jesse yelled, straightening up before kicking the warped wooden door open
Inside, a young woman was huddled in a corner clutching her terrified child to her body; their eyes were wide with fear, red-rimmed from smoke
“Fire service!; we’re getting you out!” Jesse, his voice usually quiet was now powerful ad full of conviction; he moved with a practised calm, assessing their injuries “Ash; we have two conscious; a woman and her child, minimal burns with heavy smoke inhalation”
“Excellent work; Hayley, get them to safety while Jesse clears a path; move back the way you went, stay low and keep things calm” Ash issued over his radio
Despite her fear; Hayley found a strange resolve; this was it, this was real – she knelt beside the woman, spoke with a surprisingly steady tone “We’re getting you out ma’am; put your arm around my shoulder, we’ll go slow”
Helping the mother to her feet, she proceeded to guide them, the mother kept her grip on her child as they moved – it was a slow, arduous descent, the building groaned; nearby, a section of ceiling collapsed, sending dust and debris raining down, Hayley shielded the mother and child instinctively, urging them forwards
“Incoming!” David’s voice came through followed by a burst of water from a hose line as he and Michael breached the ground floor providing a clear path for the four as Jesse continued ahead; a quick pat on David’s shoulder as he passed him
“Almost there Hardman!” Michael shouted giving her an encouraging nod
Emerging outside into the daylight, paramedic’s would rush forwards, whisking the mother and child away; Hayley watched them go, a profound sense of nascent pride washing over her causing her to smile.
The next few hours would go by like a blur of controlled chaos; the firefighters worked tirelessly checking room to room and ensuring no one else was trapped; Jamie orchestrated things a maestro of resources and directing things with practised efficiency and calmness as he communicated with other services – he was a calm in the middle of a storm, his no-nonsense approach ensured smooth efficiency and his fair nature meant he never pushed his team beyond their human limits, always maintaining communication and asking for updates on their conditions.
Finally, the fire would largely be contained with the thick black smoke lessening, replaced by steam wafting into the sky.
The team, soot-stained and drenched emerged from the building with exhausted expressions but held a quiet satisfaction of a job well done.
Back at the station towards the later evening Jamie oversaw a brief debrief; he stood before them, his expression unreadable “It was a tough one today; very tough, but, you performed admirably, every single one of you; Ash, your command on the ground was exceptional, Michael, you experience unvaluable, that focus you have Jesse saved lives, and that quick thinking David had been vital” he paused, his gaze softening as his lips curved into a smile “Hayley” he said, his eyes falling onto her “You stepped up; you faced your fears and performed”
Hayley felt her lips tug into a smile as she felt a warmth spread through her, dispelling some of the lingering chill of fear; she was exhausted, muscled ached and she could still smell the smoke that clung to her, but for the first time, she felt as though she was where she truly belonged.
